    • John, son of John and Grace Cleave.

      (1) The decision that John and Grace Cleave were the parents of John is based on the fact that they were the only couple having children at that time who not only had a son, John, but also one named James. If John's daughter, Amelia, was the niece of a James Cleave, (1871 census) then supposedly, James and John would have had to be brothers. Also, Amelia's middle name was Grace, supporting the fact that she had been named for her grandmother. Based on the 1851 census though, John should have been born around 1810 rather than 1808; to date neither he, nor his wife, Elizabeth have been found in any further censuses to allow for age comparisons.
