    • Marriage entry states: Thomas Nosworthy of the parish of Staverton and Grace Palk, both sojourners in this parish, were married in this church by banns this second day of August in the year one thousand eight hundred and eight, by me Matthew Lowndes, Vicar. In the presence of (the mark of ) Agnes Foot? and Robert Webber. Grace could not sign the register and made her mark.

Although Thomas' parents are not named on the marriage record, he is believed to be Thomas, son of William Nosworthy and Ann Cleave, for the following reasons:

      (1) The Staverton parish records demonstrate that Thomas was not baptized in that parish. The children of Thomas and Grace are the first Nosworthy baptisms in the parish after a lapse of many, many years.

      (2) Widecombe is only 8 miles from Staverton.

      (3) Thomas and Grace named their second child, Ambrose, who was born ca 1811, and Thomas' own brother, Ambrose had just died at the age of 25 in 1810.

      (4) There is a burial of a Thomas Nosworthy, in Widecombe, 06 January, 1839, whose abode was Staverton, age 62; although a couple of years out, this also supports the liklihood that this is the Thomas who married Grace. (original burial records)
