"Auntie" Nellie was adopted soon after she was born by great grandfather Cook's family. The circumstances have remained unclear. The certificate suggests that she was illigitimate although her mother was a recent widow. We do not know conclusively who her father was but the 1901 census shows a John Youle (a gas fitter) lodging with her mother.
