We are taking the unusual step of entering two death certificates here. We do know that Jane was the daughter of John Craxford and Susannah Redshaw who lived in Gretton. We do not know of a second Jane. It does appear that Jane's death was registered twice; the first time on September 13th by Catherine Waterfield - John's brother, Robert's wife; the second on September 26th by her mother. Scarlet fever was a virulent bacterial infection for which "inward fever" could have been another name.
On questioning the G.R.O. we received the following reply:
"Although I have never come across a death registered twice before, it does appear that the registration may be for the same child. The registrations are nearly 2 weeks apart and registered by two different people so it is possible that the Registrar may have accidentally made the registration twice. Unfortunately it is so long ago that it would be impossible to say definitely one way or the other. Regards, Christine Eady. GRO Contact Centre"
