The certificate suggests that she was illigitimate although her mother was a recent widow. We do not know conclusively who her father was but the 1901 census shows a John Youle (a gas fitter) lodging with her mother.

She was born to Matilda Tansley, four years before Matilda married Lewis Binley. Like her first cousin, Clara, she spent her childhood living with her grandparents. It is not known for certain who her father was. John Thomas Darker, the name entered on the birth certificate, could be the son of the licensee of the Sondes Arms Inn, Rockingham.
